The district provides a range of sporting activities and promotes folk, agricultural and cultural events.
Castelnuovo is about 13km from the walled town of Barga, 43 km from Lucca and 66 km from Pisa airport, which is less than 1 ½ hours drive away. Castelnuovo train station is on the main Pisa/Lucca to Aulla line and there is a bus station with good links to the surrounding area.
There are local ski resorts just 20 minutes away while the excellent ski resort of Abetone is 45km (50 minutes) away. The coast (Forte dei Marmi) is about an hour's drive over the Apuan Alps.
