The beautiful medieval stone built village of Colognora, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre and home of the famous “Chestnut Museum” (http://www.museodelcastagno.it – in Italian but the pictures in the photo-gallery speak for themselves) is only 20 km north of Lucca, and about the same from Bagni di Lucca.
A bread van comes every day, fruit and vegetables twice a week and general grocery van once or twice a week. You can buy fresh eggs and chickens from the locals and there is a café/restaurant in Vetriano, about 1km away.
The bustling village of Diecimo (10 minutes drive) has a good variety of shops (including 3 grocers, bakery, flower shop, hardware shop) and restaurants as well as a small railway station on the main Pisa/Lucca to Aulla line. The easy drive to the beach (Viareggio) is 50 minutes and the excellent ski resort of Abetone is just over an hour away.
