Careggine itself is over 1000 years old, with traditional stone built houses and village lanes.
 
A short drive away are the small ski lifts of Formica and Via Nova with restaurants, three ski lifts and artificial snow making facilities. The much larger resort of Abetone is about 1.5 hour away. The coast is about 60km (1.5 hours) away over the marble mountains of Carrara, making this an ideal location for holidays all year round.
 
The nearest large market town, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, is 16km away It has supermarkets, banks, garages and all manner of other shops, services and sporting facilities as well as train station on the main Pisa/Lucca to Aulla line.
