San Romano is a very friendly village. Its streets are cobbled with stones from the river and its original houses are made in hewn stone.  It has 3 cafés, 2 grocers shops,Pizzeria, chemist, bank , post-office, hairdresser, beauty salon, sports centre, swimming pool and  adventure centre.
 
Around the village are numerous trails that lead to other fantastic viewpoints. The Garfagnana countryside is quite stunning with hills, meadows, valleys, mountain streams and pools. 
 
There is  a train station on the main Pisa/Lucca to Aulla line in the nearby village of Villetta (5min drive) allowing easy journeys through the scenic Garfagnana valley to Lucca, Pisa and Florence.
 
The nearest large market town is Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is 15 minutes by car.  It has supermarkets, banks, garages and all manner of other shops and services.
