A little about the area:

Situated in 16 hectares of land, with wonderful views at every turn, this property is a perfect rural retreat, yet it is less than a 10 minute drive from the Mediaeval town of Barga. Barga is a sought after place to stay, with its hilly windy cobbled streets, duomo, 10th Century cathedral  ancient architecture and wonderful views. Renowned for its art, good quality, but reasonably priced restaurants and music, it is a fantastic place to be in the summer. There are often al fresco concerts; outdoor plays; festas with dancing; night time markets. Known as the most Scottish town in Italy there is also a famous fish and chip festival.

Closer to home, and within walking distance is the village of Albiano with its restaurant (not open every day), and also the village bar at the local pool. You can also walk up to the village to collect bread from the bread van which arrives each morning with bread and pastries (9:30 am, and no delivery Sundays).

Places to visit:

  • Castelnuovo - local market town - less than 15 mins
  • Lucca - beautiful fully walled mediaeval city, the birthplace of Puccini - 45 mins
  • Verrucole - 30 mins - local fortress with stunning views and interactive tour/museum good for children
  • Adventure park Levegliese - 25 mins - rock climbing, river canyoning, canoeing and some zip wires.
  • Buffardello park - less than 30 mins - zip wire and tree climbing adventure park. Ideal forsmall children, right up to the most adventurous of adults - many different courses to choose from.
  • Grotta del Vento - 30 mins - massive wind cave system and tours
  • Pisa - 1 hr 15 mins
  • Florence 1 hr 40 mins
  • The coast - the Versilian coast is a 1 hr 20 min drive away either via motorway, or via the stunning Apuane mountains
  • Strada del Vino - 50 mins - wine roads of Lucca
  • National Park of Orecchiella - 45 mins

These are just some suggestions since hilltop villages abound, and exploring can be either townie or totally rural - the choice is yours, if you can tear yourselves away from the house and the pool area.

NB - the odd wedding may occur on site during your stay but you have your own car park, dirveway, garden and pool private to you. Most guests love seeing a wedding unfold and the owner will treat you with free wedding food.
