Traditional, unrestored detached 4 or 5 bedroom village house (about 150 sqm excluding terraces) in the centre of Sillicano, a historic village which has its own well stocked café/grocery shop.
The house benefits from a small, triangular west and south-est facing garden area (about 15 sqm) at the front door as well as a covered, south-facing terrace (7m x 1m) on every floor, spanning almost the full length of the house.
Main floor (50 sqm): From the little triangular garden, the original sold wood front door opens into a bright and cheery dining kitchen which spans the whole breadth of the house and has a large traditional open fire, solid chestnut beams and terracotta floor tiles. From the kitchen you can access the terrace as well as 2 additional rooms currently used as a lounge and 5th bedroom. Stairs from the kitchen lead upstairs.
Upper floor (50 sqm): 4 bedrooms (2 large doubles; 1 small double; 1 large single) and old-fashioned “toilet” on corner of terrace (new bathroom required!)
Cellars (50 sqm): Below the main floor, and accessible either from the lounge or from outside, large cellar area used for storing wine and foodstuffs. Original bread/pizza oven on terrace.
First mentioned in historical records dated 952AD, Sillicano is an unspoilt village in the Garfagnana mountains of northern Tuscany, at about 600 m asl, with a population of around 120. The villagers are very welcoming and friendly, the local food and water are delicious and the air is clear. Surrounded by chestnut woodland rich in the famous “porcini” mushrooms.
In the summer, the local area has a number of open air food festivals. Sillicano itself has an annual “Sillicano under the stars” evening in which traditional local fare is sold along the village lanes and there is open air dancing in the local piazza. Another Sillicano festival well worth visiting is the “Sagra del Bombolone” - an open air feast dedicated to doughnuts!!
About 3km away, the village of Filicaia has a number of well-established food shops including a greengrocer, butcher, pub, cake shop and general store as well as a restaurant, post office and bank. Excellent schools can also be found locally.
The bustling market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (7km) has a wide selection of goods and services including a hospital, train station on the main Pisa airport/Lucca to Aulla line and a number of excellent restaurants and hotels.
